Goju Ryu Combat Classes

Goju Ryu Combat Classes at the Sir David English Sprots Centre, Bournemouth

Goju Ryu Combat is a new and highly addictive aerobics-style class designed to burn calories and promote fitness and agility. We have extracted the best elements of a proven karate fitness training regime and designed a new and exciting exercise class around them.

We don’t dance to music or have any body contact other than very light and controlled attack and defemnce moves. We promise you an intensive endurance exercise class that will work each part of your body, sweat off unwanted pounds … and it we will teach you real self defence.

If you are looking for a fun, new way to exercise that will motivate you to a whole new level of personal fitness, then take up the challenge and join us for our first class on 6th March 2012.

What to expect

A class will begin with students lining up under the direction of the instructor who will lead you through a tried and tested twenty minute warm-up session that starts with the toes and works it way up to your neck.

The next thirty minutes will be spent on an intensive punching and/or kicking exercise programme to improve technique and stamina. People are often surprised how physically challenging this section can be.

The penultimate part of the lesson will be spent working with a partner holding focus mits or kick pads. This element is all about co-ordination, movement and delivery. Shadow boxing may give you technical proficiency, but learning how to land your punches and kicks completes the circle. The combination of good technique and effective delivery are the core requirements of any self defence system.

The final ten minutes will be spent cooling-down with stretching and breathing exercises to relax the body and prevent post-exercise stress and injuries.

The Costs

As a beginner, the first two weeks are completely free and without obligations. If you want to continue after that, the weekly lessons are covered by a single £30 monthly standing order. There’s no onerous contract or cancellation notice to worry about.

  • Weekly classes covered by one monthly £30.00 Standing Order payment. Download bank mandate here.

Do I have to be fit?

The answer is ‘No’, but our lessons consist of intensive bursts of strenuous exercise interspersed with short recovery breaks. So they are not for the feint-hearted. Expect to be physically challenged, but rest assured that all our instructors are very experienced and responsible group fitness trainers. They know how to motivate people of all ages and types, and although the truism "there’s no gain without pain" applies … our lessons are always enjoyable.

Beginners will of course find the going hard at first. So we make a point of supporting and encouraging our novices through the first month of learning the moves and help them to gradually build up their core strength and stamina. You will be surprised how good you feel even after just a few weeks of regular exercise.

When can I start?

Beginners can attend on any Tuesday evening session. Just turn up at 18:45 wearing a loose t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms and introduce yourself to the instructor. They will pair you up with an experienced member who will quietly guide you through the first lesson on the back line. You don’t need any specal equipment or clothing, although an iso-tonic drink is a sensible thing to bring with you.
